■ 研究概要

電磁波は、波長の長さによって電波、光、×線など呼び方が違い、性質も異なります。100年くらいかけて徐々にその実体が解明され、いま最後の未踏領域といわれるのが電波と光の中間領域のテラヘルツ波です。この研究室では、非線形光学という光の波長を変える理論を使って、テラヘルツ波を効率よく発生させる方法を研究しています。　この分野は急速に実用化が進んでいます。例えばその性質を利用すると、タイル内部に入ったひびを高精度に検査することができます。現在、この技術がNASAで採用され、スペースシャトルの点検に使われています。さらに生体科学や医療など、幅広い分野での応用を探っているところです。国家プロジェクトに参加するなど、世界最先端技術をめざし、日々開発に取り組んでいます。
